There is an article [link] in RC Aerobase regarding battery safety, however the now widely used LiPo (Lithium Polymer) batteries need special care and the advice given by the BMFA  in their booklet THE SAFE AND EFFECTIVE USE OF LITHIUM POLYMER BATTERIES IN MODEL FLYING is authoritative and reliable.
